In 1999, Swiss adventurer Bernard Weber began a campaign to pick the seven new Wonders of the World. His foundation, New7Wonders, received almost 200 site nominations from 100 million voters around the world, over the internet and by cell phone messages. He was able to promote the campaign by flying hot-air balloons over sites such as the Acropolis and the Taj Mahal. The list of candidates was narrowed down to 21 last year and in early July 2007 the results were announced in a ceremony in Lisbon , Portugal .

The Spanish and Moroccan governments have agreed to begin construction of a tunnel below the Straits of Gibraltar. The project will be much more difficult than the Channel Tunnel linking England and France , because of the depth of the sea and other geological conditions. But, if things go according to plan, by 2050 the twin rail tunnel will be ready to carry 9 million people per year! Travelers will be able to get from Madrid to Tangier in 4 hours! |
